One of the first rules of composition most photographers learn is the Rule of Thirds. Most would agree that the Rule of Thirds is fine and will often help you get a well-balanced composition. At times though, the rule of thirds may not be the best way to compose a given scene.
Andrew S. Gibson, on his website, The Creative Photographer, does a nice job of explaining how the rule of thirds doesn’t work for every situation and gives examples of when it doesn’t work with reasons why.
