Ivan Chow has a great video discussing why they stopped getting close in street photography. It highlights how getting close can cause subjects to become affected by your presence, potentially causing the scene to become awkward.

Extremely insightful and honest. I can certainly appreciate the insights Ivan shared as I almost always hesitate when wishing to get closer to a subject in street photography. Hence, I generally don’t get close and prefer to keep a distance with my wide-angle lens. This doesn’t always produce an image that I’m happy with, but occasionally it does; when it does, it feeds my soul.
Given that I have not picked up my camera to shoot since the start of the pandemic here in the States, I find it immensely difficult to rekindle the passion that I once had for photography. Until I find my way back, I watch and learn. In this regard, Ivan has become one of my teachers. Thanks, Ivan.
